This session will begin with a look at Stereotype Threat (Steele, 2004) and the Model Minority Thesis (Min, 2004) as participants explore Biases, Judgements, and the Pygmalion Effect – the self-fulfilling prophecy. A working knowledge of Cultural Competence will be a key takeaway in this session along with exploring how misinterpreting Communication Styles and Movement Styles (Boykin, 1994; Neal, McCray, Webb-Johnson, and Bridgest, 2003) impact positive academic, social and emotional outcomes for culturally different learners. Participants will recognize how theses misinterpretations lead to high suspension rates, higher office referrals, and overrepresentation of Black and Brown children in Special Education, lower attendance, and an underrepresentation of Black and Brown children in gateway courses (Ford, 2004) – Advanced Placement, Gifted and /or Talented, and Concurrent Enrollment.
