This session builds on the Bias and Misinterpretations of Culture session by unpacking Deficit Theory (Valencia, 2010) which is grounded in Implicit Bias. The Resiliency Model (Winfield, 1991) is introduced to participants as a countering agent to dismantle Deficit Thinking, Furthermore, this session explores Cultural Responsiveness (Gay, 2010) and Cultural Relevance (Ladson-Billings, 2009) as key components for developing cultural competence., Participants will not only have a working knowledge of Cultural Competence but will develop a working definition to apply to daily interactions with culturally different adults and learners. We will explore our collective histories, cultures and identities and how they drive our daily interactions with others. This session will include a dive into how my identity informs my daily viewpoint and vantage points as an adult navigating my spaces of power, privilege and lack thereof. Clear takeaways will be modelled culturally responsive and relevant instructional strategies for ensuring social, emotional and academic equity in all spaces.
