This session goes multiple steps further in building on the working definition of Cultural Competency and Identification of Misinterpretations of Communications and Movements (Boykin, 1994; Neal, McCray, Webb-Johnson, & Bridgest, 2003). Participants will be able to see their space from a multicultural world view, highlighting specific instructional strategies and curriculum approaches to dismantling Implicit Bias. Implicit Bias is the result of socially constructed norms that we have all experienced throughout our life that teach us damaging and dangerous stereotypes and beliefs about groups not like ourselves. “Othering” is very implicit in children’s literature, in the curriculum, and in the scope and sequence. Participants will first recognize and then acknowledge how are practices perpetuate a “permanent minority” for certain groups versus others, include Women and Men; Black and White; Latino and Asian; African and European. Bank and Banks (1993) Model for Multiculturalism will be explored and participants will discover key strategies for incorporation multiple viewpoints and perspectives in every aspect of their space. Furthermore, we will recognize and value the contributions of others as essential to student learning and mastery where they have the opportunity to see their value – thus developing a more equitable learning community.
